    Description

Named after the famous Yuyuan garden in Shanghai, this restaurant provides a gastronomic experience that is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Tuck into Chinese classics such as the Fried Pine Nuts Fish, where a whole fish is deep-fried until the scales are crispy, then drizzled with a sweet and sour sauce. Other classic dishes to try here are the braised whole pork ribs, the Shaoxing Drunken Chicken, and Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings).

Be sure not to miss out on the dish Lion’s Head with hairy crab, when in season. The crab meat is dependably sweet, but it’s the pillow-y, finely minced meatballs in a rich broth made from Napa cabbage that hit a homerun. If you’re in the mood to treat yourself to something refined, try the fried shiver shrimps cooked with longjing (dragonwell) tea. The umami-packed fried shrimps are well balanced out with the sharp freshness of the Chinese tea, and are perfect for munching on in between courses. Don’t miss out on the Cantonese dim sum served over the weekends as well. While indulging in your meal, enjoy the magnificent view across Victoria Harbour and Lion Rock. (Jun 2019)

    The Buzz

"In retrospect, we were glad we ate at Shanghai Yu Yuan during hairy crab season, because one of the crab dishes we ordered made the visit worthwhile. ...We’d also be happy to eat the ham braised with osmanthus honey with fried bean curd sheet and cucumber in a steamed bun. Unlike at many other places we’ve tried, the thin slice of cured ham wasn’t stringy, the bean curd sheet was crisp, and the honey didn’t overwhelm." -SCMP
