    Description

    Just looking at this hip Causeway Bay space, you wouldn’t be able to tell it’s a yakitori joint. For starters, with its quirky decor, done up in a rustic fashion with lovely metallic, wooden features and brushed-concrete flooring, you’d be forgiven for thinking this were a run-of-the-mill cafe serving up all-day brunch fare. Yet, the menu reveals itself to be full of Japanese classics, and the air is rich with the smoky charcoal aroma of grilled meat. Skewers on sticks are the mainstay here, with Chicken Yakitori being the highlight. All the classics are on offer, including fleshy chicken thigh, Negima (chicken and leek), and chicken breast. There’s even a homemade Chicken Hamburg on skewers, served up with a dip of raw egg yolk. Other than yakitori, the kitchen turns its formidable expertise with chicken to a beautiful Deep Fried Half Chicken, a delicious breast and thigh that’s unbelievably crisp-skinned but juicy throughout, served with a miso sauce and seasonal vegetables. Sushi comes in the form of the Volcano Salmon Roe, topped with roasted Norwegian salmon and shredded carrots for a yummy but healthy snack. The most substantial of its offerings is the Chicken Hot Pot, a selection of vegetables, chicken meatballs, and other ingredients in a rich chicken broth, made fresh daily. The humble chicken is stretched to its fullest limits at this gorgeous Japanese bistro. This bird is on fire! (Aug 2017)
